Constructed between 1895-1899 for the successful portrait-photographer E. Starr Sanford, the Hearthstone occupies the summit Mountain End high above Danbury, CT. Designed by architect E. G. W. Dietrich, this remarkable castle-like structure is composed of local stone quarried on the site. Exhibiting historic Norman as well as Shingle Style and Arts and Crafts elements, this unique home served as a private residence until it was purchased by the City of Danbury in 1985. Despite being listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the house and outbuildings suffered from neglect, yet the stone walls still stand evoking romantic ideas of architecture and place.
